3 Insane Things That Happen When You Start A Plant-Based Diet

“Eat your veggies” is a phrase we’ve all heard since our time as tiny toddlers. For decades parents have been pleading with their children to eat more plant-based foods and it’s common knowledge that fruits and vegetables are good for you. However, in recent years hundreds of studies have been published backing up the power of plants through rigorous peer-reviewed research, and you won’t believe the results…

1. Eliminate Inflammation

A meta-analysis conducted by researchers at the University of Toronto examined evidence from seven trials involving over 400 patients and revealed that a portfolio-diet (a primarily plant-based way of eating) reduced inflammation by a staggering 32%. This is incredible news because inflammation is at the root of many of the chronic illnesses affecting humans today. By reducing the overall levels of inflammation in our bodies we are able to heal faster, ward off disease and cope better with stress.

2. Control Your DNA

In 2012 new evidence in the field of genomics (the study of genes) revealed that a plant-based diet actually had the ability to control and reverse chronic disease by altering the expression of certain genetic structures. The studies revealed that anti-oxidants and other plant-based compounds could help to control genes linked to cardiovascular disease, the build up of plaque in arteries and tumour growth. Of course not all genes can be controlled by eating plants, but a lot of them can and this new-found knowledge is empowering people around the world to take control of their lives.

3. Heal The Heart

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, claiming almost 20 million lives every year. In May of 2018 the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine conducted a review that revealed that a plant-based diet reduces the risk of coronary heart disease by 40% while also lowering cholesterol and unblocking clogged arteries. An even more impressing statistic the review notes is that “a healthy diet and lifestyle reduce the risk for a heart attack by 81-94%, while medications can only reduce the risk by 20-30%”. With one out of every two Americans expected to suffer from some form of heart disease in their lifetime it’s pretty spectacular that scientists have figured out how to reverse this life-threatening condition.

 

So to recap, just by eating a plant-based diet you are able to reduce inflammation by 32%, literally take control of your DNA, prevent the onset of many incurable conditions and keep your heart healthy well into old age, never mind all of the environmental and ethical benefits of plant-based living. Perhaps now it makes sense why your parents were always begging you to eat your vegetables?
